Politicians

A week ago we weren't sure what was going to happen, but now politicians did their work.
The 2 parties who won the election have assigned 2 people each to start an information round. These 4 man have to examine the possibilities to form a new cabinet.

Last Tuesday we had the State of the Union (prinsjesdag) and the Netherlands has to cut spending. Life will become more expensive that's for sure. Maybe also more attractive.

elections

The elections were on a Wednesday last week.. The previous post was on the Monday before I think.

Conservative right lost half of their seats. I expected a big loss, so this is their reward for 8 years of bad government. The sad thing is that the ultra conservative wing almost tripled their seats from 9 to 24.
The party I chose didn't loose as much as expected and is a certain winner.

Now politicians have to work to come to a quick solution and put together a brave new cabinet which makes the necessary decisions to get out of the mess we're in.
Hopefully there will be a purple wind. Purple because of the parties, progressive right joining progressive left, green and liberal left.

Wednesday I spoke a few words with E. as I call her, no she didn't go with me to vote. After that I didn't see her for a week. Two days ago I was at my old department and spoke E. again about the election. She laughed.

About the change in department, it's now a month that I'm working on the other side. It almost feels like the other side. The opposite party. Yesterday I had a quarrel, a dispute with a colleague of my old department. It's one of the bottlenecks of the new work routine I should report.

Slowly everything breaks apart. On sensible moments I can spend a tear about that feeling. Hear me, I don't complain, I have more possibilities than ever. And with the Works Counsil I have plenty to do.

I wonder how the elections in California were, but in Holland we were almost screwed with a monstrous Cabinet. I keep my breath the next weeks.

These roller coaster ride makes me to grab my bike and cycle. the last 10 days I cycled more than 500 k after work.

So if you're busy try to relax sometime, sport, go for a walk,

transition

On Friday February 19 the Dutch cabinet fell about an argument over the Dutch presence in Afghanistan. The Dutch approach will be no longer effective from August 2010. The 3 parties in the cabinet agreed upon it. Maybe other countries will have the knowledge to do our task.

The cabinet of ministers was formed in 2006 and it decided that troops in Afghanistan would pulled out of A. at December 2010 at the latest. In those days the parties had a majority in the House of Parliament. But now their support is less.

Half February the question rose what to do with the Dutch presence in A. There was an agreement between the parties, but their attitudes changed over the years in between. Labour wanted to go, the Christians wanted to stay and the confessional party didn't have an opinion.
Party leader and vice Minister-President of the Labour party Wouter Bos kept his back straight to keep the other parties to their agreement. In a previous election he was blamed he was a leader with ants in his pants, someone who can't be trusted, a liar.

At the regional election on March 3 the governing parties lost a lot of support.

Maybe that is the reason why Bos stand by the agreement between the parties.

Bos could go so far maybe because he knew that he had a successor namely the major of Amsterdam. Job Cohen could do a fine job for this country. He has the ability to keep people together.

The National elections on June 9 will give an answer on the difficulties politics finds itself.

4th of June

Election Day in the Netherlands and Great Britain.

It was a day to vote for the EU parliament.
The silly thing is we got to vote nationally.
That means that for the appr. 730 seats thousands of would be European parliamentarians are on the list. In my country we can only choose 25.

And the most stupid thing is that head president of the EU, at the moment Portuguese mr. Barroso, will be chosen behind the curtains of talks between heads of the member states. There isn't any transparency. This is no democracy.

So world, even in Europe there isn't real democracy.

I voted on a party that is in favour of the EU but doesn't want to expand for a while. The party lost half of it's previous seats. My party I vote for nationally gained in the EU elections. They doubled their seats.

November 4 2008

This election is excitement. I took a day off to follow the results at night. I'm informed now that we'll have a broadcast till 9 am. It seems not a good idea to watch all but at 1 am the first results will come in. (Kentucky and Indiana)
But it'll be historical, so I have to see it (on my tv-screen).

At 6.30 am the winner of the election for presidency will be known.
My newspaper will be delivered. The latest news will not be in it. Maybe the deadline is 2 am. Some smaller East coast States will be known.

But only at 7 am the polls in California will close. And it's possible that the 55 electors will not be important who is the next President of the USA.

Who will it be

In November '08 is the big day I think. Hopefully the US-citizens do the right thing and choose for change. I'm a little bit worried as European because what kind of change? More troops to Iraq and Afghanistan to win a war? M. said it, "I rather loose an election than a war" Just a war? Whose Waterloo was Vietnam? It wasn't M's.
Did he win? M. survived and US lost a war. Was it bad? Not at all.

The best way to win a war is to become friends with your enemy.

Bird-box and other stuff

Today: weekend.
Last night: went to bed on time
seen: I saw some World championships ice speed-skating in Salt Lake City
didn't see: World record 500 meter (in 34.25 seconds equals 52.554k/hr!)

Today is also a beautiful day with lots of sunshine. Spring has come. It's in the air. I got to renew the birth-house where the singers can nest. When I looked at the birdhouse of my neighbors in front of my house I saw a robin inspecting the nestingbox adjusted to the wall of the house.
I had a perfect sight on it and saw the bird was critical on it. I think he or she will take it. Isn't it a very, very fine house really hard to get these day's? (especially for birds in the Netherlands) Got to do some cleaning of my balcony. Got to cycle, buy grocery stuff, do all the weekend things.

I read something about sharing cars, the greenwheels-project, maybe that triggered my thought.
Some day I need a car. That's why I bought -a statement of my own-.
Let me explain. Everyone who gets a drivers licence or has a health-change has to answer a few questions concerned the ability to drive a car. If one question is answered with -no- than you need a medical receipt that you can drive a car. In my case I made an appointment with a neurology doctor to have a registration or mentioning in my drivers licence that I have had an epileptic attack (grand mal) 5 years ago and that I'm doing great now.
I don't know what the outcome will be.

About communication on the workfloor, our manager has a problem with not being informed about the talks my co-worker and I've had about possible transfer to another department. We didn't have anything on paper yet. If we have (next week) than we'll inform him. How I don't know but the interim manager knew that we had talks with the department.
My co-worker is criticised on this, but now while I write this down I consider it as criticism on me aswell. Okay, this is something to explain to the interim manager. Maybe he can tell us who informed him about our interdepartmental talks :-)

I almost forgot to mention, we had elections last week. It's the election for a governmental body which members also choose the Senate. Instead of being a region election which it supposed to be, it was an election to test the Government. If the ruling parties don't rule the Senate they have more difficulties to rule the Netherlands. (It's like America where Bush has major problems now the Senate is democratic.)

I voted for the opposition, partly green in the province and partly for Govermental change, dynamics in the Senate.
This is politics and I think that a lot got to change, the public isn't interested anymore.
Not in governing the nation (80% of the laws are based on European laws, or say decrets), not in governing the EU (influence is very low and Bruxelles is far away in people's mind)
Neither in governing the province, because we don't know what they do.
The only governing body of some interest is the Municipality because the Government is delegating tasks to the Municipality. They become more powerful.

I was member of a political party but I resigned after the new cabinet was installed. The party I chose is governing with the same prime minister as head. They digusted his ideas. He has support of Bush, he supports Bush. I don't and my party didn't too much.
